About this FAQ

This FAQ answers the most common questions Worcester-area homeowners ask before hiring a painter: what painting costs, how estimates and payments work, when exteriors can be painted, what prep and products are used, what changes for pre-1978 homes with lead paint, and what to ask any contractor before work begins.

01 / Pricing & estimates

Pricing & estimates

Typical market estimates: $400–$1,500 per room per interior room, $5,000–$10,000 for an exterior of about 1,700 square feet, $2,500–$4,000 for a kitchen of cabinets, and around $65–$100 per hour for interior painters. See painting costs.

Every job starts with a written, itemized estimate. On-site estimates are free and scheduled by appointment. A quick price estimate by text with photos is the fastest first step.

Each room, elevation or item, the prep, the number of coats, colors and sheens, the paint line, repairs priced separately, the schedule window and the payment terms.

Rico Painting asks for a 30% down payment, due only when the job starts. The payment terms are written on your estimate. No financing is available at this time.

It is shown to you, photographed and priced, and repaired only after you approve. Nothing extra is billed without your OK.

02 / Scheduling & season

Scheduling & season

From late spring into early fall on dry days within the paint label’s temperature range. Seasonal guide.

For exteriors, late winter or early spring gets the best schedule. Interiors and cabinets can usually be scheduled sooner, especially in winter.

Exterior work pauses; the schedule window on your estimate accounts for weather days. Crews often switch to prep or interior work.

One room usually takes one to two days, a full interior one to two weeks, a kitchen of cabinets about one to two weeks, and a single-family exterior about one to two weeks of working days plus weather.

Yes. Interior work is planned room by room so you always have a usable kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. How to prepare.

03 / Prep & products

Prep & products

Two finish coats is the standard, plus primer on bare wood, patches, stains and glossy surfaces.

Rico Painting uses Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Behr paints, and the exact product line is named on your estimate. You can also request a specific brand or color system.

Painters can suggest proven colors and put sample patches on the wall so you can see them in your light before deciding.

Rarely. Removing it gives a cleaner, longer-lasting result. Wallpaper removal.

Usually stain on deck boards, which wears gradually instead of peeling. Read the comparison.

04 / Older homes & lead paint

Older homes & lead paint

Paid work that disturbs paint must follow Massachusetts lead-safe renovation rules: containment, wet methods and HEPA clean-up, by a licensed lead-safe contractor. Read the guide.

No. Deleading is a separately licensed service. Lead-safe painting prep is different: it keeps dust under control during normal painting work.

Only after an asbestos test. Positive results go to a licensed abatement contractor. Popcorn ceiling removal.
